We have already reported several times about the increase in the price of memories due to the high demand for data centers for Artificial Intelligence. In fact, this increase should influence GPUs.

Now, to get around the situation, A Russian modder has assembled his own DDR5 RAM memory using modules and printed circuit boards (PCBs). The finished assembly runs successfully at 6400 Mhz and a single module supports 32 GB of desktop DDR5 memory with adequate XMP support.

Modder VIK-on acquired the RAM chips for two 16 GB SO-DIMM modules for SK Hynix brand laptops, which cost 8,000 rubles (approximately R$544.96) each. They’re a little cheaper than their desktop counterparts at the moment.

The printed circuit board was purchased in China for around 600 rubles (approximately R$40.87), while a replacement heatsink cost 415 rubles (approximately R$28.27) on AliExpress. From there, the process was as easy as assembling the pieces like Lego.

Soldering integrated circuits is no easy task, especially if it involves reballing. Suitable BGA rework stations and a lot of skill are required to avoid making mistakes. It may seem simple, but it is a delicate maneuver that requires extensive experience.

After the new module was ready, it was updated with custom firmware from a commercial kit from Adata. And this allowed the memory to obtain 6400 Mhz XMP support, which any motherboard will be able to detect in the BIOS.

Savings of more than R$3 thousand

The final price of the project was 17,015 rubles, or approximately R$1,159.06. This is much cheaper than a 32 GB module currently sold. To give you an idea, at Kabum, the most found was a kit of two 16 GB 6200 Mhz modules for R$ 3,965.99.

At Pichau, a 32 GB XPG Lancer Blade module with 6400 Mhz costs R$6,049.99, with the user having the white option for the same price. The 16 GB module costs more, at R$ 3,089.99, and the 16 GB XPG Lancer costs R$ 3,129.99.

Through Amazon, it is possible to purchase an ARES Kit with 32 GB (2x16GB) 6400 Mhz for R$ 4,352.92. This was the cheapest price we raised and there are many products out of stock.

I.e, the modder managed to save R$ 3,193.86. And prices are even higher in Russia with all the sanctions the country suffers as a result of the war in Ukraine.
