Dell revealed something that many knew but didn’t want to talk about: consumers aren’t buying PCs with a focus on Artificial Intelligence features right now. And this is another cold shower for Microsoft, which saw Windows 11’s market share fall even after the end of support for Windows 10.
The “revelation” was made in an interview with PC Gamer before CES, where Dell made it clear that its 2026 products do not exclusively prioritize AI and that the company is moving beyond the idea of having AI PCs as a priority. Unlike Microsoft, which has been exaggerating in how it forces Copilot on Windows users.

“We’re very focused on delivering the AI capabilities of a device — in fact, everything we’re announcing has an NPU built in — but what we’ve learned over the course of this year, especially from a consumer perspective, is that they are not buying based on AI“, admitted Kevin Terwilliger, head of product at Dell.
And he further added “In fact, I think AI probably confuses them more than it helps them understand a specific result.”

Honesty welcome

It’s a surprisingly honest admission from one of Microsoft’s biggest partners in the PC market. Even more so considering that the software giant continues to invest in AI capabilities for Windows and try to convince consumers to buy PCs with Copilot Plus.
Dell was one of Microsoft’s partners in the initial launch of the Copilot Plus PC in 2024, adding Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite chips to its popular XPS 13 and Inspiron laptop lines.
In fact, the company even added Qualcomm’s Cloud AI chips to its high-end laptops last year, improving AI performance for local models.
The detail is that most of the benefits of Copilot Plus PCs come from the improvement in battery life and performance of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite chips. And not necessarily from AI capabilities.
Microsoft even struggled to launch Recall, its flagship AI feature, for Copilot Plus PCs. The controversial feature ended up being released almost a year later than expected, due to delays caused by concerns raised by security experts.
And, as already highlighted at the beginning of the article, the company seems to be having difficulty gaining support.
