Inflated memory prices due to component shortages have resulted in curious news about the market, and the trend is set to continue. We now have information that users are increasingly turning to SODIMM to DIMM module adapters in order to get modules that are at least a little cheaper.
The information comes from 3DCenter.org, so it refers to the European market. There, SODIMM memories, a format aimed at notebooks, have increased by “only” 136% in recent times. Obviously, the number is not small, but it is still more attractive than the impressive 245% increase that desktop DIMM modules had.
This way, many people would be resorting to adapters to save a little. According to the website, a 16GB DDR5-4800 module can be found in Europe for around €146, while similar memories in SODIMM format appear for €100.
The difference is enough to include the price of the adapters and remain somewhat cheaper. On Amazon, these products cost between €8 and €18, while importing from China the price can drop even lower.
Memory adapters are not a solution
Obviously, this type of alternative cannot be considered a solution. SODIMM modules typically do not offer performance exactly comparable to DIMM memories, and the adapter will also have a negative impact on the components’ bandwidth. Depending on the quality of the product, this impact will be greater or lesser, but it will hardly be negligible.

It is very likely, however, that users are resorting to this knowing the negative points, simply due to a lack of options. Memories are not only increasingly expensive, they are also becoming scarce and difficult to find. For someone who necessarily needs to upgrade or build a system, there is a lack of alternatives.
With no forecast of improvements throughout 2026, we will increasingly see this type of non-ideal resource so that people at least don’t end up without a PC.
