The coming of FSR Redstonea new generation of AMD graphics technologies based on machine learning, promised a leap in graphics quality frame generationray reconstruction and lighting treatment in real time.

The problem is that, according to the official path, this package was restricted to a small number of games compatible with recent versions of FSR 3.1.4 or higher.

Faced with this limitation, the community found an alternative: using the Optical scaler to enable the FSR Redstone Frame Generation in titles that have never received direct support from AMD.

From this, the method gained traction a few days after the public release of Redstone and began to circulate on technical forums, Discords and specialized websites, drawing attention mainly from GPU users. RDNA 4currently limited by the scarcity of native integrations.

What is FSR Redstone and why is it different

FSR Redstone is AMD’s definitive transition to machine learning in your graphics stack.

Among the main components are the FSR Frame Generation com MLa ray regeneration and neural caching techniques for indirect lighting. In practice, the objective is to improve the quality of interpolated frames, reduce visual artifacts and smooth the display rhythm, especially in complex scenes.

Despite the technical advancement, AMD opted for a conservative adoption model: only games with recent integration of the FidelityFX SDK started to receive the driver upgrade, forming a list that revolves around 30 titlesa number well below the ecosystem already served by competing AI-based solutions.

Supported Games
ARC Raiders F1® 25 Mafia: The Old Country Squad
Black Myth: Wukong Farming Simulator 25 Marvel Rivals THE FINALS
Call of Duty®: Black Ops 7* God of War Ragnarök No More Room in Hell 2* The Last Caretaker*

Games marked with * indicate support via driver update or specific integration, which may vary depending on the game and driver version.

The disconnect opened space for alternative solutions outside the official path.

How Optiscaler comes into this equation

O Optical scaler is a third-party tool that acts as an intermediate layer between the game and upscaling or frame generation systems. It intercepts graphics calls and redirects inputs and outputs between technologies such as DLSS, XeSS e FSRallowing combinations that do not exist natively.

With recent updates to previous builds, Optiscaler developers started using a newer version of SDK FidelityFXenabling the use of FSR Redstone Frame Generation even in games that only have basic upscaling support, such as FSR 2 or DLSS 2.

The project itself describes this phase as experimental, but functional enough for advanced testing.

Optiscaler installation and prerequisites

To access the latest features, you must use a Preview of Optiscalerdistributed mainly via the project’s Discord. The stable version available on GitHub does not yet include Redstone support.

The process involves some technical steps, but follows a simple pattern: extract the Optiscaler files, copy them to the game folder and run a configuration script.

During installation, the user can choose to simulate NVIDIA inputsa relevant step for games that rely on DLSS Frame Generation.

Step by step to activate FSR Redstone with Optiscaler

  1. Join the Optiscaler Discord and download the latest preview build, as the public stable release does not yet include Redstone support.
  2. Extract the Optiscaler files and copy all the content to the game folder, exactly where the executable (.exe) is located.
  3. Run the setup_windows.bat file and when prompted, press 1 to enable NVIDIA input spoof. Repeat until the process completes.
  4. Start the game normally and load a playable scene before opening the Optiscaler menu.
  5. Insert plate pressure to access the Opticaler interface.
  6. Em Upscalerchange the default (usually XeSS) to FSR 3.x/4.
  7. Em Frame Generationchoose the font according to the game:
  8. OptiFG (Upscaler) for titles with old DLSS FG or without native frame generation support.
  9. DLSSG via Streamline for games compatible with Streamline SDK 2 or higher.
  10. Em FG Outputselect FSR FG.
  11. Em FSR FGchange the model to FSR 4.0.0which corresponds to Frame Generation with Redstone machine learning.
  12. Click Save THIS e restart the game to apply the changes.
  13. • After restarting, return to the game’s graphics menu and ative o Frame Generationif the option appears as DLSS FG or similar.
  14. Return to Optiscaler and confirm that the FSR 4.0.0 model remains selected.

It is worth noting that the procedure changes the game’s behavior at runtime level, which explains why the tool is not recommended for competitive titles or those with strict anti-cheat systems.

Two possible scenarios for enabling Frame Generation

How FSR Redstone works via Optiscaler changes depending on the game’s native support type.

1. Games with DLSS Frame Generation via old Streamline

In titles using early versions of StreamlineOptiscaler resorts to the so-called OptiFGa method that uses the same data from the active upscaler to generate additional frames. In this case, the user selects the FSR as the upscaler and sets the FSR Frame Generation as the output.

The visual result tends to be acceptable, but with clear limitations. Because the input data is less complete, the ML algorithm does not receive all the information it would have in a native integration, which reduces the noticeable gain compared to previous versions of FSR FG.

2. Games with DLSS Frame Generation via Streamline 2 or higher

Here is the best-case scenario. When the game offers DLSS Frame Generation modernoOptiscaler can take advantage of the DLSS advanced inputs and redirect them to the FSR Redstone FG. This leads to better HUD exclusion, fewer artifacts, and a more consistent feeling of fluidity.

Practical tests reported by the community show that, in these cases, the frame pacing behavior is very close to that expected in official solutions, even though it is an alternative implementation.

The better the quality of the game’s input data, the closer the result is to the ideal

Image quality, performance and current limits

In practice, the visual difference between FSR Redstone FG and immediately preceding versions of FSR Frame Generation is still subtle in many games.

Part of this is due to the difficulty of evaluating frame pacing with traditional tools, as common metrics do not always accurately reflect the behavior of AI-generated frames.

Even so, reports indicate that Redstone does not introduce new evident latency or instability problems when compared to previous versions, as long as it is used in compatible scenarios.

Still, it is important to reinforce: this is a solution unofficialsubject to failures, incompatibilities and possible impacts on stability.

What to expect from FSR now

The community’s rapid response to Redstone’s launch exposes a clear tension between technological advancement and the pace of official adoption. At the same time that AMD advances the use of machine learning, the dependence on specific integrations limits the immediate scope of these improvements.

Tools like Optiscaler are growing as a sign of pent-up demand. Users want to try new graphic techniques without waiting for long update cycles from studios. The question remains to what extent solutions of this type will continue to be necessary, or whether future versions of the FSR will adopt a more flexible approach from the outset.

Regardless of the path chosen, the Redstone episode shows that, in the PC ecosystem, technical innovation rarely goes alone. When there is space, the community tries to fill the gaps.
