Sapphire Technology is one of AMD’s best-known partners, working exclusively with Radeon on its home graphics cards. The company, however, would like to have more freedom in creating the design of its products. Not only it, the company considers that all AIBs should be able to “get crazy”.
The information came in an interview with Hardware Unboxed, who spoke with Ed Crisler about various topics. Crisler is a marketing manager for Sapphire, and spoke to the channel about a number of different topics. Among them, about the current card market, and how users are running out of choice.
“Sometimes I really wish the chip makers would get out of the way and let us, the partners, just make our boards. Give us the chip. Give us the RAM. Tell us what we need to offer to make the board work. Then let us make the boards,” commented Crisler, in free translation.
“Let us have our fun. Let us bring in the crazy. Let there be real differentiation. Sometimes it seems like this entire market has become very samey.”

Crisler explains that GPUs at the same level usually have differences between the most basic clock and the highest OC straight out of the box of between 1.5% and 2% – something that is often within a margin of error. In the executive’s opinion, this makes design, energy and noise level more important in users’ decisions, so he wanted more freedom to work in these areas.

The subject recalls Sapphire’s Toxic line, aimed at more extreme high-end models and which has not appeared in a long time. According to Crisler, with each new generation Sapphire thinks about bringing the Toxic cards back, but they want to do this while being more extreme in terms of appearance and performance.
This area also comes up against the issue of costs. Extreme models of this generation, such as the ASUS RTX 5090 Matrix or the Galax RTX 5090D HOF, show how expensive GPUs at this level have become, which makes bringing Radeon Toxic cards back a greater risk.
