China is reportedly planning a new billion-dollar investment in the national semiconductor industry that could become the largest subsidy of its kind ever made in the history of any country. Preliminary rumors speak of amounts reaching US$70 billion, which would be added to incentives already practiced by the nation, such as the famous Big Fund III.
The information comes from Bloomberg and is not yet official. The website reports that Chinese authorities are currently debating which companies will receive the amounts, and how much will go to each. This is what will define the final amount number. The report, however, mentions that the numbers range between US$28 billion and US$70 billion.
The maximum number easily exceeds the amount made in direct investments by Chips ACT, initiated by the Biden administration in the USA. It seems that some amount will be approved, but how much has not yet been defined.
This is yet another measure that visibly reflects China’s stance on investing increasingly in domestic chip development and manufacturing capacity. While trade tensions with the USA show no tendency to cool down, the Asian country seeks the greatest possible autonomy in technology.
