A ASUS anunciou o ROG Strix 5K XG27JCG, a 27-inch gaming monitor that combines a 5120 x 2880 panel with an overclocked 180 Hz refresh rate. The Fast IPS panel has a dual-mode option that allows users to switch to 2560 x 1440 at up to 330 Hz.
And this while maintaining the 0.3 ms response time, FreeSync Premium, G-SYNC compatibility, ELMB 2 strobing and VESA DisplayHDR 600 certification.

In addition to several other features, it comes with ROG Gaming AI technology, bringing artificial intelligence features such as Dynamic Shadow Boost, Dynamic Crosshair and AI Visual, which offer players a competitive advantage in matches.
In terms of connections, the new monitor includes 1 DisplayPort 1.4 port (DSC), 2 HDMI® 2.1 ports and USB-C with 15 W. So far, there is no official global suggested price, but the ROG Strix 5K is already listed in stores in Hong Kong for HKD 6,499 (R$ 4,548.34).
More information should be revealed during CES 2026.

The main highlight is the pixel density, as ASUS confirmed 218 PPI for this 27-inch 5K panel. In terms of comparison, a typical 32-inch 4K monitor has around 138 PPI, which many users consider to be a sweet spot for mixed desktop and gaming use.
A 27-inch 4K display already has a higher density of approximately 163 PPI and generally benefits from slight scaling.
The transition to a 27-inch 5K display increases pixel density considerably. And this means that running Windows at 100% scaling will result in very small UI elements.
This also means that for most people, a scale of 120% to 150% will be practically mandatory, even while maintaining the sharpness gains of 5K.

Despite this, this density offers advantages for the target audience.
The panel offers around 77% more pixels than a 4K monitor of the same sizewhich means more workspace in native mode and much sharper text and interfaces. This is especially useful for content creation and Mac configurations optimized for “Retina-style” layouts at approximately 220 PPI.
At the same time, the dual-mode design offers a practical alternative: for gaming, simply switch the monitor to 1440p at 330Hz, where the GPU requirements and interface size are much friendliermaintaining the 27-inch/1440p combination that many gamers already prefer.
Only modern GPUs

One detail is the footnote about GPU support. ASUS states that 5K resolution at up to 180 Hz requires a “compatible graphics card”. Only NVIDIA GeForce 50 series and AMD Radeon RX 7600 or newer GPUs are listed as supporting this requirement.
There is some strangeness because the monitor itself still uses DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC and HDMI 2.1, and not DisplayPort 2.1. Below is the translation:

Support for 5K resolution at up to 180 Hz requires a compatible graphics card. Only NVIDIA GeForce 50 series and AMD Radeon RX 7600 or newer GPUs meet this requirement.
Actual compatibility, performance, and feature availability may vary depending on system hardware, drivers, and software environment. For complete details, see the product FAQ section.
Explaining, the raw bandwidth required for 5120 x 2880 at 180 Hz with 10-bit 4:4:4 is far greater than the transmission capacity of an uncompressed DP 1.4 connection. Therefore, the mode relies on aggressive DSC compression and precise synchronization.
The RTX 40 series cards offer DP 1.4a and HDMI 2.1a, and ASUS has not published a detailed explanation of why they do not support 5K resolution at up to 180 Hz. So at this time, the restriction appears to be a validation and bandwidth margin decision rather than a technical impossibility.
The safest thing is to consider that ASUS guarantees 5K at 180 Hz only on the latest DP 2.1 class GPUs. Some older cards may still negotiate high refresh rate DSC modes in practice.
