As we approach the large-scale debut of the Intel 18A semiconductor manufacturing process, the company’s partners are already testing the next generation, the 14A technology. And now we have information from Patrick Moorhead that the results have been viewed with optimism by potential future lithography customers.
Moorhead himself writes a post on his website where he talks about Intel customers with whom he has spoken about the potential of the company’s Foundry division, and people seem optimistic about the 14A process.
“Intel customers I spoke to who saw the technology say 14A is the real deal,” says the analyst. “(…) 14A should be highly competitive not only in the data center and PC markets, but in mobile chips as well, which will be an important change for the company.”
The arrival of 18A has also helped with optimism for the generation that comes after, according to the analyst. “I’m excited for Intel to release its PDK 14A .5 so I can start hearing feedback on it. But make no mistake: even without the PDK available, I’m already hearing very positive things given the progress of 18A as each node builds on the last.”
Intel’s production capacity would be the main concern
While Intel’s partners are excited about what its future technologies have to offer, the company’s total production capacity, in terms of number of units, continues to be a concern.
“The prospects I talk to – and I have recently spoken to almost every CEO of potential customers for Intel Foundry – consistently express their need to have real confidence that wafer allocations will be scrupulously fair,” said Moorhead.

The 18A process will be incorporated into Panther Lake notebook processors in early 2026 and later in Nova Lake desktop processors. For data centers and servers we will have the Clearwater Forest generation. These will be decisive products for Intel to prove its production capacity in advanced processes.
