Phoronix revisited the performance of the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K “Arrow Lake” processor for Linux desktops. The new analysis was carried out one year after launch and, considering more than 240 tests, the chip now offers around 9% higher performance compared to October 2024.

Furthermore, average CPU power consumption dropped from 136W to 116W, approximately 85% of the original levell. Complete test results can be viewed on Phoronix.

For this round of testing, the same hardware configuration remained. The Phoronix used the same Core Ultra 9 285K, ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z890 HERO motherboard, 2 x 16 GB of DDR5-6400 memory and a Radeon RX 7900 GRE graphics card.

House changes in terms of software. The original tests used Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with Linux kernel 6.10, GCC 13.2 and Mesa 24.2, while the new version uses Ubuntu 25.10, Linux 6.18 Git, GCC 15.2 and Mesa 25.2.

Web workloads show some of the biggest gains. Firefox benchmarks like Speedometer, Octane, and Jetstream scale better on the new stack, thanks to browser updates and kernel work around scheduling Arrow Lake’s P and E cores.

Power consumption during these browser tests is also lower than at launch.

The improvements extend to code compilation, content creation, HPC workloads, media encoding, and AI speech recognition tests like Whisper.cpp. And most of the results graphs favor the configuration used in the most recent test, that is, in November of this year.

The geometric mean of all benchmarks shows an increase of 9%while the average CPU power consumption drops by around 20 W and the maximum consumption remains in the same 250 W range.

According to Phoronix, This is due to Intel Linux’s continued efforts to improve hybrid core behavior and to tools like Thermald, which gradually increase Arrow Lake’s efficiency.

The 9% gains may be small in statistical terms, but you have to remember that when using a high-performance processor, even a few gains can mean a lot of raw gain. And the price is something that speaks about the capabilities.

At Kabum, Intel Core Ultra 9 285K processors can be purchased for prices such as R$ 3,228.99 (24 cores and up to 5.7 GHz) and R$ 4,499.99 (24 cores and up to 5.6 GHz). It is also possible to purchase desktops assembled with the processor, with an option available at R$40,662.00.
