TSMC has invested heavily to maintain and even increase its dominance in the advanced semiconductor manufacturing segment. That’s why the company also released an updated roadmap this week, highlighting that its plans continue as planned, as it moves towards achieving the 1.4nm process, also known as A14.
The roadmap highlights its processes since 2019’s N5 (5nm), which still used FinFET manufacturing technology. Subsequent processes up to N3C still employ the same technology, while N2, introduced this year, switches to Nanosheet. As can be seen in the image, the A16 will also be Nanosheet when it arrives between the end of 2026 and the beginning of 2027, but the A14 will bring new technology in 2028.

On another slide, TSMC highlights some of the advances promised by the A14, comparing it with the N7 to make the numbers more impactful. What really draws attention is the focus on energy efficiency of the new generation.
TSMC promises an increase of 1.8 times more performance from the N7 to the A14, when two components using the same amount of energy are compared. But in efficiency, specifically, the promise is an improvement of 4.2 times more.

TSMC still does not officially talk about the scale of its production
TSMC’s new charts were not accompanied by official confirmation about its focus on increasing the scale of its production. This week we had information from CC Wei, head of the company, that the largest chip manufacturer in the world would still be far behind in meeting all the demand for advanced semiconductors that currently exists.

A few days later, we had a rumor that three more factories for 2nm chips were being built in Taiwan, in addition to 7 others previously planned, for a total of 10.
We haven’t had official confirmation on these latest expansion plans, but we’ve known since the beginning of the month that construction of the factory for chips using the A14 process has already begun.
