Tuxedo Computers announced this weekend that it no longer intends to launch a Linux notebook equipped with the ARM-based Snapdragon X Elite processor. The decision was made after 18 months of work on the project, but it does not yet mean a complete abandonment of Qualcomm components.

The company claims that the first-generation Snapdragon X Elite “proved to be less suitable for Linux than expected”. The main problem was achieving the same battery life on Linux that the processor offers for Windows devices on ARM. And this is one of the great attractions for the products.

Other problems listed are the lack of a viable plan for BIOS updates on Linux, fan control, virtualization of machines with KVM being impossible and substandard USB-4 transfer rates. The company also does not ignore that we are getting closer to the arrival of the second generation of the processor.

“Given these conditions, investing many more months in development time does not seem sensible, nor is it predictable that all the resources you can correctly expect will be available in the end”, explains Tuxedo Computers. “In addition, we would be offering you a device with a more than two-year-old Snapdragon X Elite processor, whose successor, the Snapdragon X2 Elite, was officially announced in September 2025 and is expected in the first half of 2026.”

New generation of Snapdragon X could resurrect the project

At the same time that it helped to suspend the project, the arrival of the Snapdragon X2 Elite could also result in its return. The company informs that it will evaluate the viability of the new generation of processor with Linux and, if possible, would like to reuse the work that has already started with the Snapdragon X Elite.

“If it meets expectations and if we can reuse a significant portion of our work with the X1E, we can return to development,” says the company. “How much of our work already done can be transferred to the X2E can only be estimated after a detailed evaluation of the chip.”
