The Steam Machine has been a topic of debate in the hardware world since its unveiling, but one of its aspects that has been less discussed is that Valve designed the small PC with a front panel that can be easily swapped for customization. Thus, we already have companies proposing possible mods for the arrival of the product.
JSAUX went to Reddit to ask users which type of panel they prefer – dot matrix or E-Ink. The company didn’t propose a poll itself, so we don’t know if people should really choose or if the post is just instigating debate and we could end up seeing both options.
The E-Ink panel is clearly based on something that Valve itself showed. In its presentation of the Steam Machine to PC Gamer, the company showed some front panel prototypes, including the version with an E-Ink screen showing system data. The company, however, made it clear that it is for internal use only and has no plans to directly sell these individual panels.
That’s where companies like JSAUX come in, to help users customize their machines. The company states that future updates on the availability of the panels will be made in the Reddit post it used to reveal the news.
Dbrand goes further and wants to transform Steam Machine into Companion Cube
Dbrand, known for its aggressive marketing with mods and special covers for consoles, went beyond a simple modification to the front panel and wants to transform the Steam Machine into the Companion Cube, from the Portal series games.
It was inevitable that some company would turn Valve’s compact cube-shaped PC into the most famous cubic object from one of its games. Unfortunately, however, we do not have details on how Dbrand intends to offer this case and how it may influence the machine’s cooling capacity.

With the launch of Steam Machines only scheduled for next year, it will probably be a while before we have more details about these mods. And more options should appear by then too.
