At the end of yesterday, November 19th, NVIDIA released the new GeForce 581.94 driver, which brings a hotfix to correct performance drops in games in the Windows 11 KB5066835 update.
Hotfix 581.94 builds on top of 581.80, which is still the latest driver from NVIDIA. As it is an emergency fix, the update is being offered on a separate channel for those who do manual downloads. However, it is also possible to update via the NVIDA App, just as automatic updates normally occur.

It is important to note that there is a small error when updating through the app. The new driver appears dated April 16, 2025, but it was made available yesterday, November 19. To be sure, just pay attention to the GeForce driver version, which is 581.94.
It is worth mentioning that, on its official page, NVIDIA highlights that hotfix drivers like this are considered “beta”, because they do not go through the same quality control process as a WHQL driver, to speed up availability.
New Windows 11 performance bug only affects NVIDIA?
Windows 11 update KB5066835 was introduced in October, but performance bugs in certain games affect newer versions of the update as well – which includes KB5068861. The update was distributed to systems with Windows 11 25H2 or 24H2 automatically.
To find out whether your machine may have been affected, simply access the settings and, in the “system” section, click on “about”. Your specific build appears in the Windows specifications. Affected versions are 26200.6899 (Windows 11 25H2) and 26100.6899 (Windows 24H2) or newer.

What remains to be seen is whether GPUs from other companies are also impacted by the problem. So far only NVIDIA has commented, through the hotfix. The folks at Windows Latest, however, tested the problem on AMD and Intel machines and were able to reproduce the performance drops. The site believes that there could be two different problems causing the performance issues.
