Summary
- Windows Edge Light is an application that turns the edge of the screen into an adjustable “ring light” to improve lighting in video calls;
- The app, developed by Scott Hanselman, allows you to adjust opacity and has shortcuts for intensity control;
- Windows Edge Light can be integrated with PowerToys and is now available on GitHub for Windows 10 and 11.
Windows Edge Light. This is the name of a small application for Windows that turns the edge of the entire computer screen white to create a “ring light” effect. The goal is to illuminate your face when you are participating in video calls, especially in low-light environments.
The news was revealed by Scott Hanselman, vice president of the Microsoft developer community. The executive also appears as the main developer of the tool.
When running, Windows Edge Light allows the opacity level of the white stripe to be adjusted so that the user can regulate the intensity of the lighting. You can also use shortcuts:
- Ctrl + Shift + L: turns the lighting on or off
- Ctrl + Shift + Up Arrow: increases brightness
- Ctrl + Shift + Down Arrow: reduces brightness
Overall, the tool works well. However, the app may not have much effect if your notebook or monitor screen does not have a good brightness level.

Windows Edge Light could be part of PowerToys
Despite its simplicity, Windows Edge Light appears to be so useful that it could be integrated into PowerToys. Taras Buria, from Neowincommented on this possibility with Clint Rutkas, leader of this project. The executive responded that he is already talking to Hanselman about this.
It makes sense. PowerToys brings together several very useful small applications for Windows, and Windows Edge Light has all the necessary characteristics to be one of them: it is lightweight, easy to use and meets a specific need.
In the meantime, you can download Windows Edge Light from GitHub. There, choose the version most appropriate to your computer (with Arm or x86 chip). Note that the link also allows you to download the tool’s source code. The new feature works on Windows 11 and Windows 10.
It is worth noting that Apple started developing a tool of this type shortly before Microsoft. It is being tested on macOS Tahoe 26.2 and is also called “Edge Light”.
