Renesas announced today, November 13th, a new clock driver (RCD) that helps take DDR5 RDIMM modules up to 9,600MT/s speed. According to the company, this is the first Gen6 component for memories of this type, and also the fastest, being the first to reach this level of mega transfers per second – MT/s.

RDIMM modules are typically used in data centers and other professional scenarios, as they include a registration chip that helps maintain data integrity. While CUDIMM models even for home use are increasingly faster, according to Renesas this is the first time we see this level of performance reaching DDR5 modules of this type.

The company says its Gen6 RCD brings a 10% increase in bandwidth compared to the previous generation RCD. Still, it is fully backwards compatible with already installed platforms, to facilitate upgrades. Renesas also promises improvements in signal integrity and energy efficiency, to help with AI and LLM workloads, in addition to HPC.

Samsung helped with the development of the new Renesas driver

In its announcement for the sixth generation RCD, Renesas highlights Samsung’s participation in the development of the clock driver. The two companies have worked together for years creating new components.

“Samsung has collaborated with Renesas across multiple generations of its memory interface components, including the successful qualification of RCD Gen5 for DDR5 and PMIC5030,” said Samsung executive Indong Kim. “We are now excited to integrate RCD Gen6 into our DDR5 DIMMs across multiple SoC platforms to support the growing demands of AI, HPC and other memory-intensive workloads.”

DDR5 RDIMM at 9,600MT/s in practice is still a little far away

Renesas informs that samples for its new RCD Gen6 RRG5006x are already being sent to selected customers, to begin testing on their DDR5 RDIMM modules.

However, it is important to note that Renesas offers the clock driver, not the complete module. It is the company’s customers who will test the new RCD and then implement it in their production line.

Therefore, availability for manufacturing remains a little distant, expected only for the first half of 2027.
