Announced this week by Valve, its new vision for the Steam Machine has many excited about the future of the company’s hardware. However, she herself makes it clear that the announcement of the device does not mean that it is already preparing to show the world a new generation of Steam Deck 2.
In an interview with IGN, software engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais reinforced what he had already confirmed in several other interviews. For him, the company will only find it interesting to launch a new version of its laptop when it realizes that it is capable of delivering a different generation of the product.
“One thing we are guaranteeing is that it will be a performance upgrade that makes it worth becoming a separate product“, the Steam Deck engineer explained. He also explained that when the new hardware arrives, it will bring performance that will not only be 50% better than the device already available to the public.
Steam Deck 2 will bring a true generational leap
“We’re not interested in getting to a point where we can get 20 or 30, or even 50% more performance with the same battery life.“, explained Griffais. According to him, the Steam Deck 2 will represent a true generational leapwhose bases are already being defined at the current time.
“I believe we have a very good idea of what the new version of the Steam Deck will be, but at the moment there are no offerings in this scenario, in the field of SoCs, that we believe would provide true next-gen performance”, concludes the Valve software engineer.
With this, the company distances itself from the market strategy of manufacturers such as ASUS and Lenovo, which have already brought several products to stores. While Valve’s handheld doesn’t have the best hardware on the market, it continues to stand out thanks to the optimizations provided by SteamOS.
Launched with a custom Z1 Extreme chip, the Steam Deck proved to be revolutionary for managing to popularize the portable PC segmentwhich until then was considered quite niche. Even so, expectations are high for what the manufacturer will be able to present in its second generation.
