Although the PlayStation 6 (PS6) has been the subject of rumors for some time, Sony doesn’t seem to be in that rush to bring a new console to stores. According to the company’s CFO, Lin Tao, the corporation believes that it is too early to talk about the device, as the PS5 has just reached the halfway point of its life cycle.
The statement was made in a question and answer session with investors, which took place shortly after the company released its most recent fiscal report. In the document, it announced that it has sold more than 84 million units of the device since it hit stores at the end of 2020.
“This year, in year 6 since launch, the PS5 is growing its user base,” explained Tao. “And our view is that, compared to the conventional life cycle of a console, and looking at the PS4 cycle, it seems like they’re getting longer and longer.”, continued the executive.
PS5 still has a long way to go
The executive also explained that although the PS4 is no longer Sony’s focus, it continues to have a large user base. This helps explain why, 13 years after the console’s launch, many studios continue to support it — and others are abandoning it at a slower pace.
“From this perspective, we believe that the PS5 is only in the middle of its journey, and we are really planning to expand it further“, said Lin Tao. Although the console’s sales are following Sony’s projections, it is part of a generation considered strange by many consumers.
This is because, with the considerable increase in development time for games in the Triple A segment, many platform owners They have the feeling that it has still been little used. So, it seems absurd to start thinking about the possibility of having to invest heavily in a PS6 in a few years.
During the meeting, the CFO also stated that the company will not make public comments about its future plans at this time.
