Sales of the iPhone Air did not reach the level expected by Apple. It is for this reason that the model’s successor, which could be called iPhone Air 2, is not expected to be launched in 2026. In the best case scenario, the device will arrive sometime in 2027.
At least that’s what the website reports The Information. The vehicle claims to have heard from people close to Apple who, on condition of anonymity, revealed that the company decided to postpone the launch of the successor to the iPhone Air to work on a project capable of making the model more attractive to consumers.
Due to this need for a rework, so to speak, Apple has notified engineers and suppliers that the second generation iPhone Air is out of the next release schedule for the iPhone line.
This does not mean that the model has been cancelled, but that Apple is reviewing the project to apparently attack the aspects that made the current iPhone Air a sales failure.
The problem is so serious that the accumulation of model units on shelves caused Luxshare, Apple’s partner in manufacturing the iPhone Air, to suspend production of the model at the end of October. Foxconn has also begun dismantling its iPhone Air production lines and is expected to close them completely by the end of the year.
Apple tries to fill the gap left by the iPhone Mini
The iPhone Air is Apple’s latest attempt to fill the spaces left by the iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 13 Mini, which stood out for their reduced dimensions, which included a screen measuring just 5.4 inches.
The Mini models were not as successful as expected, which is why Apple went to the other extreme: it started to focus on iPhones Plus, with an enlarged screen. However, the larger models also did not reach the sales volume intended by the company.
But the company didn’t give up on having a different iPhone. The iPhone Air is just 5.64 mm thick, and this “thinness” is the model’s main characteristic. However, the rear of the model only has one camera and the battery only has 3,149 mAh. It is likely that these features contributed to the iPhone Air not selling well.
Not by chance, there is talk that the iPhone Air 2 will have a dual camera on the back and even a vapor chamber cooling system, like the iPhone 17 Pro. But, for now, all of this is in the field of rumors.
