TSMC has already begun construction of a new factory in Taichung, Taiwan, which will be aimed at manufacturing components using lithography as small as 1.4nm. The information comes from the Taiwan Economic Daily, which also reports that the facility is expected to cost the equivalent of US$48.5 billion, and is expected to start operating in 2028.

A lot could change in the next two years, but TSMC is currently the largest chipmaker in the world, and its new factory in Taiwan is expected to be the most advanced yet.

The company’s accelerated expansion, both in the number of facilities and the complexity of its technologies, is testament to the high demand for orders that the manufacturer receives from international customers, such as NVIDIA, Apple and AMD.

The Taichung factory had first been planned for the production of 2nm chips, but there was a change in strategy on the part of TSMC. To maintain its most advanced processes in Taiwan, the company will focus even more on them in the country, while increasing the production of past technologies in its factories around the world, as it receives authorization to do so. The company will soon begin mass producing 2nm in Texas, for example.

TSMC prepares for the future

We are currently still in the 3nm process, with some of the biggest companies already placing 2nm orders for TSMC, which have not yet reached the market. Before reaching 1.4nm, the company will also offer 1.6nm chips.

However, the company needs to continue moving quickly to maintain its position as the world’s largest chipmaker. Its new 1.4nm facility is expected to deliver its first components in late 2027, with mass production in 2028. The fab is expected to be capable of delivering approximately 50,000 wafers per month.

TSMC’s first customers for new processes are generally mobile-focused, such as Apple, Qualcomm and MediaTek. However, the AI boom has changed the scenario a little, and we even have rumors that NVIDIA will be the manufacturer’s first customer for 1.6nm, for example.
