AMD ended October with the controversial decision to place its Radeon RX 5000 and RX 6000 GPUs in “maintenance mode” for driver updates, which does not guarantee game support in the future arriving alongside updates for the Radeon RX 9000. The decision, however, only affects cards on Windows, and Linux users can rest assured.
Many Linux enthusiasts didn’t worry, but even the Phoronix website, completely specialized in the platform, reports that a good number of people were confused by AMD’s new policy, so a clarification note is necessary.

Also in September this year, AMD discontinued its own AMDVLK driver to offer full support for the community-maintained RADV driver on Linux. In other words, the driver for Radeon GPUs on Linux is basically independent of AMD and its decisions, so it will continue to be updated normally.
“In a decision to simplify development and strengthen our commitment to the open-source community, AMD will unify the Vulkan driver strategy for Linux and has decided to discontinue the open-source AMDVLK project, moving our full support for the RADV driver as the officially supported open-source Vulkan driver for Radeon,” the company stated at the time.

Drivers for AMD on Linux reach even the old Radeon R9 300
Phoronix mentions in its post that the AMDGPU kernel driver is so broad that it supports by default even very old AMD cards, still on the GCN 1.2 architecture. This is the case with models like the Radeon R9 Fury X, for example. The site also mentions occasional improvements even for very old ATI models.

In other words, more current and still very popular GPUs, especially the Radeon RX 6000 series, should continue to receive a lot of support in the open-source driver community.
“These Radeon Software support changes in the Windows driver have traditionally had no impact on gamers and Linux enthusiasts,” the site concludes.
