The rays continue to trace not only the realistic real-time paths for the light beams, but also the users’ hardware: The Outer Worlds 2 with ray tracing does not reach 60 FPS even at 540p with RTX 5090 and Ryzen 9800X3D!

The technology analyst Daniel Owen and other content creators have documented performance failures reminiscent of issues with Borderlands 4 at its launch.

However, before we start with the detailed explanations about optimizing the noR RPG from Obsidiancheck the results generated (in the Owen’s tests) on different hardware and configurations:

Hardware configuration Game Settings Resolution (Internal) Performance (FPS)
Ryzen 5 5600X + GTX 1070 Casualties, FSR Performance 1080p (540p) less than 30
Ryzen 5 5600X + RTX 3080 12GB Casualties, FSR Performance 1080p (540p) Almost 60 (unstable)
Ryzen 7 9800X3D + RTX 5090 Máximas (sem Ray Tracing), DLSS Performance 4K (1080p) Above 60 (solid)
Ryzen 7 9800X3D + RTX 5090 Do 4K Native 45 ~ 50
Ryzen 7 9800X3D + RTX 5090 Ray Tracing ativado, DLSS Performance 1080p (540p) Less than 60 (unstable)

Problematic graphics settings in The Outer Worlds 2

Contextualizing the information above, among the visual optionsor mode of ray tracing proved particularly problematic and absurdly cumbersome.

Tests indicate that the functionality imposes a heavy load even on high-performance processors, such as Ryzen 7 9800X3D da AMDresulting in frame rates below 60 FPS at resolutions lower than 1080p.

Tests were carried out on three different hardware configurations. The first used a Ryzen 5 5600X com one GTX 1070 graphics card, representing the game’s minimum requirements.

The second combined the same processor with a 12GB RTX 3080aligned with the recommended requirements. The third configuration employed a top-of-the-line set with Ryzen 7 9800X3D ea video card NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090.

Insufficient performance on recommended hardware

The results demonstrated that both configurations based on Ryzen 5 5600X failed to maintain 60 FPS stably.

No computer with GTX 1070the game presented difficulty reaching 30 FPS in one of the urban areas, even with graphics in low mode and technology FSR configured for maximum performance at 1080p, equivalent to an internal resolution of 540p.

The change to RTX 3080 of 12 GB brought a considerable improvement, allowing the game to approached the 60 FPS mark with the same settings.

However, even with all the visual adjustments at the lowest level, the experience was not entirely stable.

Consistent fluidity at any graphical setting was observed only at the most powerful setting, with the Ryzen 7 9800X3D ea RTX 5090.

With these components, the game operated above 60 FPS in 4K resolutionusing DLSS in performance mode and visual settings at maximum, with ray tracing exception.

However, running the game on 4K native com Dlaa and maximum settings, but still without ray tracing, resulted in a performance between 45 and 50 FPS. In turn, enabling the dreaded ray tracing had a profound impact on performance.

Em 1080p com DLSS in performance modethe combination of RTX 5090 e Ryzen 7 9800X3D it was unable to sustain 60 FPS.

The performance of The Outer Worlds 2 on current hardware it is below expectations for a title with this profile, raising questions about its optimization status.

The game has Difficulty running smoothly at the lowest settings, even on systems that meet its recommended requirements. To make matters worse, the ray tracing mode proved to be particularly heavy, impacting gameplay.

The situation highlights the performance challenges faced by Borderlands 4which also struggles to maintain 60 FPS on current commodity hardware.

To owners of the RTX 50 lineif you really care about ray tracing, unfortunately you will have to rely on additional resources, such as Multi Frame Generation (MFG)to make it a little more palatable, but Very far away ideal — as the “real” frames per second are very unstable and low, further damaging latency.
