Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber, believes that all cars will be autonomous within 20 years. Therefore, knowing how to drive will be almost the same as enjoying horse riding today.
For him, the popularization of technology could lead to a smaller number of private cars and better safety indicators for automatic driving. “Humans are fallible, and I think there is much less tolerance for these types of errors involving machines, especially if these errors lead to fatalities,” explained the executive.
The executive’s prediction was made during an interview with Mathias Döpfner, CEO of Axel Springer, a media company that owns publications such as Business Insider, Politico e Bild. Döpfner asked the transport company’s leader to share one of his big bets for the future.
Humans may be banned from driving
Khosrowshahi made an even bolder dig at human drivers. “I have no doubt that humans will be [condutores] less secure than robots as this technology matures. Should we allow humans to drive on roads? I think this is a real question that societies will need to ask.”
This is not the first time that an important name in this sector has made a prediction of this type. In September 2023, Kyle Vogt, co-founder and then-CEO of self-driving car company Cruise, said he would be honored to support a ban on human drivers.
The executive considered a scenario in which autonomous vehicles would be 100 times safer than humans. Therefore, there would be no reason to release a 100 times less safe version of transport in an urban area, coexisting with pedestrians and cyclists.
Vogt stepped down as Cruise’s CEO in November 2023, a month after the state of California (United States) revoked the company’s operating license due to episodes such as an accident, a traffic jam that hindered an ambulance and confusion leaving a show.
