Summary
- Grokipedia, launched by Elon Musk, is a new online encyclopedia that uses AI to review articles, but copies content directly from Wikipedia in several entries.
- Grokipedia does not allow open editing like Wikipedia and is presented as “completely open source”, but the project code has not been made available.
- The Wikimedia Foundation responded to the release by stating that Grokipedia depends on Wikipedia for its existence, highlighting the importance of human collaboration in creating knowledge.
A new online encyclopedia has been available since yesterday (27): Grokipedia, an alternative to the well-known Wikipedia, with content reviewed and edited by Grok, X’s AI model. The tool was designed to adapt to the views of its owner, billionaire Elon Musk.
Despite being clearly a competitor, part of Grokipedia’s content consists of a direct copy of articles from Wikipedia in English. The tool is available in version v0.1. The page has more than 885 thousand articles available, all also in English.

Although Grokipedia’s content is based on edits made by Grok, the Wiki itself does not have any integration with LLM for advanced search.
How did Grokipedia come about?
At the end of September, during a podcast, businessman David Sacks suggested that Wikipedia was very biased and, in his words, maintained by “an army of left-wing activists”. He is an investor in technology and currently has a close involvement in Donald Trump’s government, where he is treated as “czar of Artificial Intelligence and cryptocurrencies”.
We are building Grokipedia @xAI.
Will be a massive improvement over Wikipedia.
Frankly, it is a necessary step towards the xAI goal of understanding the Universe. https://t.co/xvSeWkpALy
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) September 30, 2025
According to him, because many LLMs are trained based on Wikipedia content, they inherit the supposed bias in their answers.
From this comes the idea of Grokipedia, an alternative to Wikipedia that uses Grok AI to filter content considered biased. Musk’s idea would be to make an impartial encyclopedia.
It is worth remembering that, in July of this year, xAI needed to make adjustments to Grok to correct biased behavior in X responses.
A copy of Wikipedia
Articles on Grokipedia display a warning just above the title, stating that the data has been fact-checked by Grok. However, as Jay Peters pointed out in The Vergeentries such as the MacBook Air also contain the warning that the content was adapted from Wikipedia.

Furthermore, articles like the one on PlayStation 5 have basically identical content to Wikipedia. Apparently, in some of these cases, Grok was not even used to paraphrase the original content.

This first version of Grokipedia possibly prioritized changes to entries with some political meaning. The article “Prime minister“, for example, has clearly different content between the two Wikis.
The broadcaster NBC News pointed out that the Grokipedia article about Donald Trump does not mention the creation of a president-themed cryptocurrency nor the luxury plane gifted by Qatar. This information is included in a Wikipedia “Conflicts of Interest” section.
How Grokpedia works
It’s still not 100% clear how Grokipedia should work, but it appears so far that it’s basically a copy of Wikipedia revised by Grok. Unlike traditional Wikipedia, where any user can directly edit articles, Grokipedia does not allow this open collaboration.
As pointed out by the The Vergeon some pages it is possible to see a button that would give the option to collaborate with the content. However, you cannot make any changes. The user can only view a history of page edits.

Is Grokipedia open source?
At the launch of Grokipedia, Elon Musk made a post stating that the wiki is “completely open source” and free for all users. Although the project is indeed free, it is difficult to classify it as open source, as X has not made any type of project code available.
The Wikimedia Foundation’s response
In response to the launch of Grokipedia and the criticism made by Elon Musk and David Sacks, Lauren Dickinson, a spokesperson for the Wikimedia Foundation, published a short statement commenting that even Grokipedia depends on Wikipedia to exist:
“Wikipedia’s knowledge is – and always will be – human. Through open collaboration and consensus, people of all backgrounds build a neutral, living record of human understanding – one that reflects our collective diversity and curiosity. This human-created knowledge is what AI companies rely on to generate content; even Grokipedia needs Wikipedia to exist.”
