PNY is the latest company to offer a 14.9GB/s PCIe 5.0 SSD, just days after TeamGroup revealed the T-Force Z54E. The main difference with the new product, however, is that it was immediately available for sale, with a very competitive price.
The PNY CS3250 is available in 1TB and 2TB capacities, costing US$126 (R$677) and US$220 (R$1,182), respectively. These are very aggressive values, taking into account that the Samsung 9100 Pro, for example, cost US$172 and offered less speed. Here in Brazil, this drive can currently be found for R$1,200. Unfortunately we don’t yet know the price of the T-Force Z54E to make the same comparison.
Despite already launching its products available on shelves, PNY did not offer many technical details about its new PCIe 5.0 SSDs. We only know that both the 1TB and 2TB models reach 14,900MB/s in reading, with the recording of the smaller capacity drive reaching 13,500MB/s and the most advanced model at 14,000MB/s.
At the moment only these two capacity options are available, but PNY has already confirmed a 4TB one on the way, and even released images.
The company also highlights that the controller comes with a “thermal coating”, but does not say which controller it is. It also does not report random speeds or durability metrics, but offers a five-year warranty.
PNY CS3250 possibly uses the Phison E28
The breakthrough that allowed TeamGroup to create the T-Force Z54E with 14.9GB/s was the implementation of the new Phison E28 high-performance controller. Although PNY has not confirmed the same component in its products either, we can speculate that this is the case.
Based on this assumption, another bet we can make is the presence of BiCS8 flash memory modules, from SanDisk, based on 218-layer TLC. This is because, according to Tom’s Hardware sources, the E28 controller drivers would communicate better with these components.

In any case, we will need to wait for technical reviews to be sure. It shouldn’t take long, as the PNY CS3250 are now available.
