A OpenAI made official this Tuesday (21) the launch of ChatGPT Atlasyour first web browser with native artificial intelligence. The product puts Sam Altman’s company on a direct collision course with established giants such as Google Chrome and Apple Safari, promising to reinvent the way we interact with the internet.

What is ChatGPT Atlas?

ChatGPT Atlas is a complete web browser that integrates ChatGPT as a central element of the browsing experience. Unlike extensions or add-ons that add AI to existing browsers, Atlas was built from scratch with artificial intelligence at the heart of the product.

Ben Goodger, Atlas engineering lead, revealed that the project began with a simple question: “What if you could talk to your browser?” The answer is a browser that eliminates years of complexity accumulated by traditional browsers, replacing them with a natural conversational interface.

When and where is Atlas available?

ChatGPT Atlas is now available for macOS. OpenAI confirmed that versions for Windows, iOS and Android are scheduled to arrive “soon”, with no specific date.

How does ChatGPT Atlas work?

Barra lateral “Ask ChatGPT”

Sidechat Dark

The technical difference of the Atlas is in the barra lateral permanente which keeps ChatGPT always accessible while browsing. This interface maintains automatic context of everything that happens on the screen, eliminating the need to copy and paste text or drag files manually

Adam Fry, product lead at OpenAI, explained that the browser has “context for everything you’re doing online.” In practice, this means that you can ask about any element on the open page and ChatGPT will respond based on the visible content.

Smart history with persistent memory

The Atlas records the websites visited and actions taken by the user, personalizing responses based on this accumulated history. This persistent memory allows the browser to offer increasingly relevant suggestions as you use it.

Agent Mode: AI that acts for you

Atlas’ most disruptive feature is its integration with OperatorOpenAI’s AI agent capable of executing web tasks autonomously, an approach similar to that of Perplexity does with the Comet. The browser can perform actions on its own such as:

  • Restaurant reservations

  • Online supermarket shopping

  • Automatic form filling

  • Creating shopping lists from recipes

  • Appointment scheduling

Integrated conversational search

Atlas searches open with a response generated by ChatGPT at the top, but maintain quick access tabs for traditional results, images and other options. This hybrid approach combines the best of both worlds: direct AI responses and access to traditional sources.

Inline editing with Cursor Chat

The “Cursor Chat” feature allows edit texts directly in the browserwithout needing to copy content to external tools. Simply select the text and ask ChatGPT to rephrase, summarize or expand the content.

Why did OpenAI create a browser?

Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT at OpenAI, said in an interview with TechCrunch which takes inspiration from how browsers redefined the concept of an operating system. For him, ChatGPT represents a similar phenomenon in the way people work online.

Com 400 million weekly active users of ChatGPT, OpenAI identified an opportunity to transform the browsing behavior of this massive audience. If it can convert a significant fraction of these users to Atlas, the company could redefine the browser market.
