Summary
- ChatGPT Atlas is an OpenAI browser with ChatGPT integration, available for macOS initially and based on Chromium;
- Browser offers direct interaction with ChatGPT features, including tasks such as summarizing texts and generating responses to emails;
- ChatGPT Plus, Pro or Business subscribers have access to Agent Mode for complex tasks.
Rumors about OpenAI launching a browser started in 2024 and finally came true. ChatGPT Atlas, as it is called, differs from traditional options, such as Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, by having artificial intelligence resources as a base.
As the buzz predicted, the foundation of ChatGPT Atlas is Chromium, which is also the basic structure of browsers such as the aforementioned Chrome and Edge, as well as options such as Opera, Brave and Vivaldi.
What’s different about ChatGPT Atlas?
As the official name makes clear, OpenAI’s goal with the new browser is to make ChatGPT’s generative AI capabilities closer to the user.
When you have a question or task to ask the service, you can do so from the browser itself, typing the instructions (prompts) in the address bar and clicking or tapping the “Ask ChatGPT” button on the right.
By default, the browser displays an interaction field with ChatGPT when a tab is opened, similar to what Google does with Chrome. There, you can give instructions to ChatGPT by text or voice, using the device’s microphone.
Equally or more interesting is the possibility of asking ChatGPT to perform tasks involving an already open tab, such as summarizing the text of a page or providing more details about the information that appears there.
On desktop, results appear in a column to the right of the browser, which can be enabled or hidden at any time. The end of this column has a field for the user to continue interacting with ChatGPT, if necessary.
ChatGPT Atlas is also capable of working with specific points on a page. For example, if you are composing a message in Gmail, you can use ChatGPT in the compose window to generate text or a creative response, for example.

Another interesting feature is what OpenAI calls “Browser Memories”, which makes ChatGPT remember details of the user’s previous web browsing to offer more accurate information or recover a page accessed some time ago, among other possibilities.
In short: the new browser makes all navigation integrated with ChatGPT, whether the user is accessing a page with static content or a website with dynamic content.
Although the browser is free, ChatGPT Plus, Pro or Business subscribers are the only ones who can activate Agent Mode. Still in its initial phase, the feature allows ChatGPT to perform more complex tasks, such as creating a menu for a dinner or adding items to an online store cart based on a shopping list.

Of course, basic features for web browsing are also there, such as support for multiple tabs, bookmarks area, dark mode and download manager. Data such as passwords, bookmarks and browsing history can be imported from other browsers.
ChatGPT Atlas Availability
At this launch stage, ChatGPT Atlas is only available for macOS, on the official website. It’s free, worth remembering.
OpenAI promises to release versions of the browser for Windows, iOS and Android soon.
OpenAI did not usher in the era of AI browsers. There are other solutions of this type available, such as Opera Neon. The browser has an additional bar at the top that houses tabs with content treated with generative AI.
Opera Neon’s AI results can be generated by services like ChatGPT and Gemini. There is also a function called Make, which creates personalized pages, games and even web apps, with the result being stored on Opera’s servers.
