Intel began preparing the ground for the arrival of its Nova Lake processors, which should be presented only next year. A new Patch for the Linux kernel reveals interesting news about the CPUS nomenclature, especially.
As shown in the capture below, made by the Phoronix site, it is a very basic update, adding identifiers for the future CPU generation. This year we will still have the arrival of Panther Lake components, marking the debut of process 18a. It is the same technology that will be used in the manufacture of Panther Lake, which arrive in 2026 in desktop and mobile components.
What draws the most attention to the patch is that Intel Nova Lake will be identified as Family 18. In lines of code we can see that Wildcat Lake still appear as Family 6, classification that Intel has been using in different processors for 20 years.
According to Phoronix information, in addition to the New Lake to go to Family 18, the future generation for professional use on servers, Diamond Rapids, will be classified as Family 19. So, Intel seems to be saying goodbye to the name Family 6 that appeared in so many of its products.
Two versions of Nova Lake appear in New Patch
Intel’s patch image shows two versions of Nova Lake as Family 18, one accompanied by “L”. It is low power, that is, the versions of the CPUs focused on notebooks and compact devices. As they belong to the same Family 18, they are accompanied by the Model 3 indicator, while the desktop versions are model 1.

It’s another confirmation that we’ll see next generation models for desktop and notebooks, as expected for some time. The Panther Lake, who arrive before, will offer only processor options for notebooks.
The good news is that we already have rumors that the BGA2540 Socket for the Panther Lake-HX will continue to compatible with the Nova Lake-HX on their arrival.
