The introduction of a version of the MSI Claw A8 laptop with Ryzen Z2 Extreme was not just important because MSI gave up its exclusivity with Intel in these products. The news is also interesting to see comparatives between the company’s handhelds with different processors, and now they finally started to appear.

On the Chinese social network Bilibili, the famous Golden Pig Upgrade showed MSI Claw A8 comparisons running games against MSI Claw 8 Ai+. The laptops are equipped, respectively, with the Ryzen Z2 Extreme and the Intel Core Ultra 7 258V.

The image above shows that, running games at 1080p with a 17W TDP, the Ryzen Z2 Extreme was quietly in front of the Core Ultra 7 258V in most cases. This is the most important metric for a laptop, which needs to balance performance with energy consumption and deliver acceptable autonomy.

Raising TDP to 30W we have the results below. It is possible to say that the Extreme Z2 remains in front, on average, but its leadership is not as visible as in 17W. For Monster Hunter Wilds and Assassin’s Creed Shadows, however, we have a very considerable difference of performance.

Ryzen Z2 Extreme is ahead, but test may not have been very “fair”

Tom’s hardware staff attentive to a very important fact in the comparison between the two versions of MSI Claw. It turns out that the calculation of energy in the Ryzen Z2 Extreme often separates the count from the use of CPU and memory, while in the case of Intel processor often these numbers appear added.

The Golden Pig Upgrade test does not explain how the energy calculation was made and if this difference was taken into consideration. Thus, it may be that the Extreme Z2 is effectively using 17W and 30W in the tests, while Core Ultra 7 258V would be using a little less, as part of this energy has been told from what goes to memory.

Anyway, for the user we can see that MSI Claw A8 delivers a final experience of better use, with more performance and fluidity. The option with Intel comes out better in really low TDPs, saving more battery, but it is not the ideal scenario in a game laptop. For the case of this product, specifically, the option with Ryzen Z2 Extreme looks like the most attractive option, if found at the same price.
