Nvidia celebrated a few weeks ago the possibility of being able to sell its H20 GPUS to China again. The celebration was followed by an order of 300,000 units of products for manufacturing by TSMC, according to Reuters report. Now, however, they are Chinese authorities that question the use of products for national security.
It is also Reuters that reports that administration for cyberspace of China, a regulatory agency for the Internet and similar technologies in the country, raised the question about H20 security. Rulers of the Asian country would be concerned about recent US statements, which would have raised the possibility of equipping export chips with tracking and positioning functions.

The report states that China’s authorities have called on Nvidia representatives today, on the 31st, to give explanations to the H20. They want guarantees that components do not have any backdoor or any safety risks for Chinese companies that choose to use the products.
Nvidia was contacted by Reuters, but has not yet offered an official opinion on the situation.
Questioning the H20 should not result in a blockade
Market analysts see new statements by Chinese authorities much more as a symbolic gesture than something that will effectively result in a new blockade of the products. This type of questioning about product safety and possible backdoors introduction usually happens in components coming to the US.

“We do not believe that Beijing will make excessively hard demands or introduce regulatory obstacles that effectively remove Nvidia from China,” said an 86Research analyst. “Due to the lack of alternatives, China still needs Nvidia chips for domestic research and applications.”

However, the country’s dependence is no longer as it was and its advances are enough to press Nvidia and the US in new negotiations. This is how you interpret another analysis from Gavekal Dragonomics. “China obviously has more courage and home replacement abilities compared to previous years so as not to depend on foreign technologies,” analysts say.
