7-Zip, a popular Open Source tool to compact files, must become a more interesting option for very advanced users and for use in workstations. This is because its latest version, 25.00, finally supports processors with over 64 threads.
The updated version is now available for free download on the app’s official website and also by your Github. On the platform, Changelog explains:
“The 7-Zip for Windows can now use more than 64 CPU threads for compression for ZIP/7Z/XZ files and 7-Zip benchmark,” says the free translation post.
The news is interesting especially because it better takes advantage of threads in situations with various processors as well. The post adds that “if there are more than one processor group on Windows (in systems with more than 64 CPU threads), 7-Zip distributes to run the CPU threads over different processor groups.”
Obviously, they are advanced processors that will take advantage of the feature, such as AMD’s Threadripper line, which soon reaches its new generation reaching 96 nuclei with 192 threads on the Threadripper Pro 9995WX model. But there is news for the household segment as well.
7-Zip promises more performance in new version
In addition to support to dozens of threads, 7-Zip version 25.00 brings performance increments to Bzip2, promising improvements between 15% and 40%. It is a very large range between the minimum and the maximum projected, but even in cases where the difference is lower, 15% should already be noticeable.

Another less significant improvement is in compression zip and GZ, which promises between 1% and 3% more performance. Finally, corrections of bugs and vulnerabilities were also made, as usual for new versions of an app.
The novelty of 7-Zip will surely make the app more interesting for threadripper and xeon users than integrated zip files management. According to the ZIP folder creator for the Microsoft system, to this day Windows deals with these files in single thread.
