Chinese companies have announced a new interface for data and energy transfer, GPMI. The acronym means General Purpose Media Interface and the promise is much more data and energy band than we have available today. And the most interesting part is that the interface can be implemented in USB Type-C and Type-B connections.
The GPMI standard promises up to 192gbps of data and up to 480W of energy, greatly surpassing the current interfaces used. The consortium of companies in China behind the development of the new technology is intended to allow devices to operate with a single cable, taking advantage of the large volume of functions it holds. And all this without needing a new connection. It is important to emphasize that its functionality is bidirectional, to complete.
Interestingly, GPMI’s maximum potential is reached by USB-B, a less widespread USB format. However, even from USB-C the interface already delivers more data than all commercially available video connections. Videocardz organized a comparison:

GPMI can offer everything for one cable
Some of the companies involved in the project are known worldwide, such as TCL, Huawei and Hisense. In one of their examples, according to Videocardz translation, they mention a set-top box that uses hdmi for video, Wi-Fi for connection and power outlet. These three elements could be offered by a single GPMI cable.

Like every new technology, we need to see in practice to check out how many of the promises come true. However, GPMI does not seem far from starting to appear on products.
Companies plan a release in “phases”. First will be home entertainment devices, then we will have products in the automotive and transport segment. Finally, China’s companies hope to see GPMI being used even in industrial applications.
