Intel, famous for the limited support of its sockets and ample processor portfolio, published last week a text promoting greater modularity on PCs and notebooks. The company’s idea is that easier devices to fix and receive upgrades will help reduce the amount of electronic waste.

To emphasize the importance of the subject, Intel’s text begins citing some data. Annually, more than 60 million tons of electronic waste is dumped around the world, with less than 25% being correctly collected and less than 12% reaching recycling. Of the total waste, 70% comes from computers.

Intel then proposes greater modularity on three levels:

  • Factory Modularity: Device assembly should be done with flexibility and high reuse in designs, responding to the needs of consumer orders.
  • Field Modularity: Trained employees could make specific changes to PC components and notebooks at the time of user purchase. It is not the same technical level of the factory, but would still allow some customization.
  • User Modularity: Seeking more design solutions that will allow users to be able to upgrade their equipment at home.

Intel gives suggestions for mini PCs and Modular Notebooks

Desktop PCs are already famous for their great modularity, which is one of the main attractions for those seeking the format. Thus, Intel is dedicated to offering design suggestions for notebooks and mini PCs, the formats in which it is harder to make upgrades and repairs.

Intel suggests that a good modularity solution is compatible components between several generations and can be reused in different segments on the same platform. It would be the case, for example, that the same socket could be reused not only in future processor generations, but also on different performance and price levels.

The company also advocates the LPCAMM format of memories for notebooks and sodimm for mini PCs, which would help in their substitutions.
