The rumors were right: after a long time of silence, Nintendo confirmed this Thursday (16) the existence of the Nintendo Switch 2 and released the first official images of the device. As expected, the model will follow the characteristics of its predecessor, adopting a hybrid format.
This means that it can be used both as a portable and as a desktop console, as long as it is attached to its base. In the introduction video, the company showed that the new version will feature larger Joy-Cons and a larger screen, and the accessory has a redesigned analogue stick and buttons, as well as magnetic attachments to the body of the hardware.
The confirmation of the Nintendo Switch 2 was also accompanied by images of what appears to be a new chapter in the Mario Kart series — something that previous rumors had also revealed. The Japanese company also confirmed that, when attached to its charging base, a part of the console’s screen will remain exposed.
Nintendo Switch 2 will gain more details in April
Without going into further technical details about the device, Nintendo also took the opportunity to confirm its backwards compatibility with the original Switch from 2017. It states that Both digital and physical titles will work on the new devicealthough I noted that there may be some exceptions.
In practice, the video was just a small teaser for the Nintendo Switch 2, which should gain new details on April 2nd. The Japanese manufacturer has scheduled a Direct transmission for that date in which it should present more information about the new hardware, as well as share new software and, probably, details such as price and release date.
If the rumors continue to prove true, the new console will have Joy-Cons with mouse functions and a new upscale technology from NVIDIA. Furthermore, its improved hardware should guarantee even greater third party support, including companies such as Square Enix, Konami, Microsoft and Ubisoft, among many others.
