During CES 2025, an electronics fair that takes place in the city of Las Vegas, USA, we had the opportunity to visit the AMD stand. And it was there that we were able to see a demonstration of AMD FSR 4 in action for the first time.
The company officially calls the solution AMD Graphics Reserach AI-based Upscaling. It will be compatible with AMD Ryzen 9000 Series processors and Radeon Graphics GPUs. The idea is that the technology is direct competition to NVIDIA DLSS 4.
AMD FSR4: what to expect from the technology
AMD FSR4 is a technology that uses machine learning (AI) for upscaling. At the event, AMD presented a demonstration with the game Ratchet & Clank: In Another Dimension running the FSR3 and FSR4 versions side by side.
Although it did not reveal details, AMD indicates that performance is comparable. In other words, in similar systems both perform at similar levels. However, the company makes it clear that these are still drivers under development, and there may be changes until the final version is released.
Our presenter Diego Kerber, who took a closer look at the new feature, highlighted that the perception of artifacts in moving images is lower in FSR4. Therefore, the good news is that the evolution is noticeable, even if we consider that both the driver and the software for the GPUs used are still demonstrative.
On the other hand, the bad news is that if you don’t have a 9000 series graphics card, you might be left out of the game – something not yet confirmed by AMD.
