An overclocker from China has set a new world overclocking record using an Intel Core i9-14900KF. The person behind the feat goes by the name of wytiwx, and took the processor to 9.12GHz, surpassing the previous mark with very little difference. This is only the second time that the 9GHz barrier has been overcome.

The previous record was set by Elmor, also using a Core i9-14900KF. The overclocker took the Intel processor to 9,117.75MHz. In other words, its record was beaten with less than 4MHz difference, since wytiwx reached 9,121.61MHz. You can check the ranking in detail on HWBot.

Interestingly, the processor was overclocked on a PC with Windows 7. The motherboard was an ASUS ROG Maximus Z970 Apex, accompanied by 16GB of DDR5 memory. Meanwhile, the CPU itself has had its e-cores disabled and hyperthreading turned off, to focus on the higher clock numbers.

It is noteworthy that the Core i9-14900KF is a 2023 processor, being the only one capable of surpassing the record that was first set by itself. It is important to remember, however, that the frequency of a processor does not alone define its performance in practice. Even more so when we talk about extreme overclocking, which rarely reflects any common usability for a component.

Intel Core i9-14900KF is a Raptor Lake at the top

The 13th and 14th generation of Intel processors, also known as Raptor Lake and Raptor Lake Refresh, were marked by degradation problems that were later discovered. The manufacturer had enormous difficulty in mitigating the defect and last year was marked by reports of games suffering crashes with processors from these lines.

According to Tom’s Hardware, the Core i9-14900KF is still at the top of the Intel options for games, with its 24 cores and 32 threads. Obviously home users will not use the processor at more than 9GHz, but its boost clock straight out of the box takes the product up to 6GHz, and it is unlocked for overclocking.

Meanwhile, in the Arrow Lake generation, Intel decided to focus more on efficiency, and the processors did not arrive without problems either.
