During CES 2025, o HDMI Forum presented, as promised, the new standard HDMI 2.2which brings significant advances in resolution, refresh rate and audio and video synchronization.
The highlight of the new specification is the increase in bandwidth to impressive 96Gbps — twice as much as the previous generation —, enabling support for resolutions of up to 10K with 120Hz refresh rates.
The novelty arrives accompanied by a new cable, called Ultra96developed to support all the features of HDMI 2.2. Although HDMI 2.1 already meets most current needs, the new standard must meet the growing demand for larger screens and higher graphic quality.
With HDMI 2.2, we are not only increasing bandwidth to unprecedented levels, but also solving persistent audio and video synchronization issues
Support colossal resolutions and refresh rates
HDMI 2.2 expands support for 4K a 480Hz, 8K a 240Hz e 10K a 120Hzwhich may seem excessive to most consumers at the moment.
However, with televisions increasingly optimized for 4K a 144Hzthe specification brings a technological horizon that accommodates future advances in the coming years, mainly for game enthusiasts and content creators.
However, as pointed out in our guide to HDMI 2.1 cables, it’s not always necessary to rush out to replace your current cable. Many setups already operate well with HDMI 2.1, and the impact of HDMI 2.2 will become more evident with the arrival of content that demands these features.
Maximum bandwidths for all HDMI generations up to HDMI 2.2:
HDMI version | Maximum Bandwidth | Supported Resolutions/Refresh Rate |
---|---|---|
HDMI 1.0 | 4.95 Gbps | 1080p a 60Hz |
HDMI 1.1 | 4.95 Gbps | 1080p a 60Hz |
HDMI 1.2 | 4.95 Gbps | 1080p a 60Hz |
HDMI 1.3 | 10.2 Gbps | 4K a 30Hz |
HDMI 1.4 | 10.2 Gbps | 4K a 30Hz |
HDMI 2.0 | 18 Gbps | 4K a 60Hz |
HDMI 2.1 | 48 Gbps | 4K a 144Hz (monitor) e 120 Hz (TV), 8K a 60Hz |
HDMI 2.2 | 96 Gbps | 4K a 480Hz, 8K a 240Hz, 10K a 120Hz |
Improved audio and video synchronization
One of the most useful advancements in HDMI 2.2 is the introduction of Latency Indication Protocol (LIP)designed to solve synchronization problems between audio and video in more complex setups involving AV receivers or soundbars.
Although HDMI 2.1 and eARC have already significantly reduced these inconsistencies, the new protocol promises to eliminate these headaches once and for all.
The improvement may appeal to users who face synchronization issues, as discussed in specialized topics about HDMI cable brands and models.
Certification and prevention of counterfeits
To prevent counterfeiting and guarantee the authenticity of products, the HDMI Forum has implemented a certification program with anti-counterfeiting labels that highlight the brand Ultra96.
The HDMI 2.2 standard will be released to partners in first half of 2025 and will be available for all HDMI 2.x compatible devices. To take advantage of the features, both your TV and external devices will need to support the new specification.
That said, with promises of greater quality and user experience, HDMI 2.2 marks the beginning of a new era for home theater and technology enthusiasts.
