AMD’s new generation of RDNA 4 graphics cards was presented at CES 2025 with two models. The Radeon RX 9070 XT and Radeon RX 9070 officially mark the debut of not only a new architecture, but also a new nomenclature for AMD graphics cards.

AMD presented its new generation RDNA 4, confirming some of the information that appeared in rumors. In addition to the inevitable promises of increasingly advanced AI, the company claims that its new GPUs offer ray tracing improved by CU (Compute Unit), with better media encoding quality.

The slide above highlights that the new components that equip the Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 are manufactured using the 4nm process. AI accelerators reach their second generation, while ray tracing accelerators are in their third. This is possibly the most awaited improvement by AMD fans, since in rasterization its latest GPUs are not as far from the competition as in ray tracing.

Speaking of the competition, AMD confirmed that its new graphics card nomenclature was designed to offer a more direct comparison with its NVIDIA rivals. Furthermore, the company also highlighted that it “jumped” to the 9000 because it will use 8000 in new GPUs integrated into the architecture RDNA 3.5.

As shown in the image above, there are already nine manufacturers with guaranteed products for the new Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 models. PowerColor, for example, made daily teasers of its Red Devil variant until the cards were officially revealed.

AMD also showed the positioning it aims for its new cards. The image below shows that the Radeon RX 9070 XT was made to compete with the RTX 4070 Ti, confirming that the company has no plans to take on the RTX 4090 or 4080.

The image also confirms that the Radeon RX 9060 models should arrive later, but at the moment we only have confirmation of the Radeon RX 9070 XT and the RX 9070, which will make their debut in the first quarter of this year.

To promote the arrival of its new video cards, AMD also presented the latest version of its super resolution technology, FSR 4 (FidelityFX Super Resolution 4). The company promises “upscaling driven by machine learning”.

The “fine print” in the image above highlights that FSR 4 is only compatible with Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 models, in compatible games that already have FSR 3.1 integrated. Therefore, users of past RDNA generations will not be able to take advantage of the latest version of the technology. It’s curious that AMD doesn’t mention the RX 9060 in this case, but it is likely because the plates have not yet had their proper debut.

The company further promotes AI capabilities for its GPU management software, Adrenalin. According to AMD, it will be possible to generate images, summarize legal documents and chat with an AI chat about matters pertinent to the Radeon owner.
