The camera of a car Google Maps caught the exact moment when a crime was trying to be hidden. Unbelievable? But that’s exactly what happened in Tajueco, a small town in the province of Soria, Spain, with around 60 inhabitants.

The case made headlines in local and international newspapers.. It all started with the discovery of the torso of a man in an advanced state of decomposition in the cemetery of Andaluz, a neighboring village of Tajueco. The corpse, dismembered and hidden among the graves, led the police to investigate a disappearance reported months earlier. The victim, a 32-year-old Cuban man, had told a relative that he was moving to Soria after meeting a woman.

The crime

The investigation revealed a plot like a movie script, with three main parts: the victim, the two detained suspects and a possible romantic relationship that linked the three. One of those arrested is a local resident, while the other is a Cuban woman, ex-wife of the first suspect and who, apparently, was in a relationship with the victim.

According to the main police theory, the Cuban traveled to the region to find the woman. Upon arrival, he discovered that she was the ex-wife of one of the residents, which would have triggered the fatal conflict. The victim’s body was dismembered and hidden in the cemetery.

What makes the case even more impressive is the unexpected participation of Google Maps in the investigation. During the searches, the police received a clue from one of the images captured by Street View. In the photograph, taken in October 2024, it is possible to see a man placing a large volume, wrapped in a bag, in the trunk of a car.

The detail drew attention because the suspicious object had the size and shape of a body. In the image, the man appears leaning over, wearing jeans, a jacket and with a cell phone in his back pocket. By one of those extraordinary coincidences, the Google Maps car had passed through Tajueco, a city that hadn’t even had updated records on Street View since 2009.

The coincidence is impressive. With just over 50 residents, Tajueco is the type of town that rarely appears on digital maps. And even so, the Google vehicle captured the exact moment that may have revealed one of the alleged killer’s steps.

Although it sounds like a thriller movie script, this is not the first time that Google Maps has played a role in criminal investigations. In 2021, the service helped Italian police capture a mobster who had been on the run for two decades. He was identified while talking at the entrance of a store in Galapagar, Spain, thanks to Street View images.
