SanDisk revealed this week the look of its new logo, which should appear on the company’s next products. Moving away from the original format, the new design features the brand name written in capital letters, using incomplete letters, with the intention of appearing more “futuristic”.
According to SanDisk executives, the “S” in the new logo begins with a dot that would be a reference to a pixel. “It’s the smallest fundamental unit of data,” declared Andre Filip, CEO of ELA Advertising, the advertising agency that designed the logo. “It’s the first letter, it’s like the cornerstone of the company,” added Joel Davis, from SanDisk itself.
The open “D” would be a reference to the previous logo, which also had this incomplete letter. The rest of the characters didn’t receive as much explanation. Apparently, imagining what the logo would look like on a spaceship was one of the sources of inspiration for its “futuristic” design.
Those responsible for the new design say they also sought the public’s opinion in its creation. Davis says he even personally went to stores that sell SanDisk products to ask customers what they thought of the new logo.

SanDisk will become a WD spinoff
SanDisk was founded in 1988 as SunDisk. The company changed its name in 1995 and, eleven years later, it was purchased by Western Digital for US$15.59 billion. Since then, we have had different storage solutions appearing under both names on different products.
This year, however, WD decided to separate its operations from its subsidiary to facilitate the offering of its drives. Thus, WD will continue to work with HDDs, while SanDisk specializes in SSDs and NAND storage.
The timing of the introduction of the new logo, then, seems to be closely related to this decision. Taking advantage of this new phase in its logistics, the company introduces a renewed logo.
