The MX500 is gone: Crucial confirms the end of its popular SSD line

Crucial recently confirmed that it has discontinued one of its most popular lines of SSDs: the MX500. The drives, which still connect via SATA III, are now seven years old and will no longer be manufactured or distributed. This way, the products can only be found while current stores stocks last.

The information comes from the German website Computerbase, which received a statement directly from Crucial, confirming the end of the MX500. A company spokesperson said: “The Crucial MX500 was certainly a great drive. We are creating space in the line for new products and look forward to sharing what’s next with you soon.”

The manufacturer’s statement, however, does not make it clear whether these products that come “next” will be new drives still based on SATA. As models of NVMe M.2 SSDs become more affordable, they also become more popular, but the classic 2.5” format with SATA interface is still highly sought after by those looking to save money.

Crucial’s MX500 SSD model has been very popular over its seven years, offering a good relationship between cost and performance. Here at Adrenaline, in fact, the 1TB model secured a gold seal in mid-2018.

Part of this success can be attributed to the fact that Crucial chose to use NAND TLC memories in the construction of the MX500 drives, while other SSDs in the segment generally use QLC. In general terms, TLC memories offer more performance and durability, while QLC brings more capacity for lower prices.

In other words, the question is not only whether Crucial intends to introduce new SSD drives with a SATA connection soon, but also which version of NAND memories they will use. With the market for 2.5” drives still hot, it would not be a surprise for a new product in the format, it is the TLC technology that is becoming increasingly difficult to expect in the segment.
