Modders turn the PS5 into a notebook with a 4K screen

A team of Chinese modders called Notebook Review Studio revealed on the social network Weibo a new project to transform the PS5 into a portable device. Using the console’s internal components and some parts made with 3D printing, they created a notebook-shaped PS5, the BBook AI Original Edition.

The project already attracts attention due to its name, which has little justification for using the word “AI”, other than surfing the hype of the moment. What really draws attention, from an engineering point of view, is that modders appear to have created a customized cooling solution for the PS5 hardware in its new format.

Obviously the new design style demands an attached screen. Here we have a 17.3” IPS display with 4K resolution (3840 x 2160) and 60Hz refresh rate. The hardware of the BBook AI Original Edition is listed as follows by Notebook Review Studio:

PS5 transformed into a notebook is not so portable

The BBook AI Original Edition is certainly more portable than the original PS5, but it has several “buts” when compared to a traditional notebook. Starting with the size, which you can already see in the images. The device measures 31.3mm thick, weighing 4.321kg. Furthermore, it has an external source that weighs 500g alone.

Another thing that draws attention is the noise level. Apparently, using the custom cooling system, the PS5 notebook can reach up to 71.3dB during gameplay.

Unlike many projects of this type, the people at Notebook Review Studio intend to sell devices based on their new project. They advertised the product for 19,999 yuan, the equivalent of R$16,611 at the current price. However, there is no direct sales channel, so they will offer the notebook on an order basis, made by contacting the team.
