Intel sought to show this week that it is still investing in the dedicated GPU segment with the arrival of its new Battlemage generation. To highlight its investment in this type of product, the company showed several partners working on the launch of customized versions of the boards (AIBs). This included a very unknown one until now: ONIXX.
To begin the mystery surrounding this new brand, its name appears written in different ways in official documents and artwork. In the disclosure below from Intel, for its partners in Battlemage, AIB appears as ONIX.
However, the same company appears as ONIXX in another document from the Battlemage owner, also listing its partners. The screenshot below comes from this excerpt:
Investigating the matter, VideoCardz found a post on the Chinese website Benchlife that mentions that ONIXX appeared registered as “Onix Technology” in Hong Kong for the first time in August this year. Apparently, it is linked in some way to the much better known Sapphire.
For a company to form in August and have signs ready to display in December is an impressive window of time. It would make more sense for ONIXX to actually be a subsidiary or “spin-off” of another already established manufacturer. Perhaps Sapphire has chosen to create an exclusive brand to work with Intel, but the link between the companies has not yet been officially confirmed.
ONIXX will offer two Battlemage cards
In Intel’s announcement we can see that ONIXX will make its debut with two GPUs based on Battlemage. One model is called Lumi and the other Odyssey. As indicated by the name, the Lumi model comes with customizable RGB lights, with a white housing. The Odyssey version is more discreet, all in black and apparently without lights.
More about Intel’s new GPUs:
There’s no way to know at this point, however, whether we’re looking at Arc B580 or Arc B570 cards. Each design variant can be reserved for one of the models, or both designs for the same.
With Battlemage cards from Intel partners hitting stores on December 13th, we should have more details on what’s new from ONIXX by the end of next week.
