3DMark releases new test for DirectStorage on SSDs on Windows

3DMark announced this week the introduction of a new performance test, aimed especially at the DirectStorage feature in Windows. Users will be able to test the performance of their SSDs to see how much Microsoft’s technology effectively helps gaming performance.

The folks at UL Solutions, the company behind 3DMark, explain the advantages of a benchmark to test DirectStorage performance. Basically, it’s the same advantage for most synthetic tests: there are a huge variety of factors that impact the final performance of your machine with a game, so it’s difficult to determine the quality of specific features.

“The test simulates a scenario close to the best possible for implementing DirectStorage, where asset loading is not impacted by other variables such as the game’s asset management system or other tasks being done by the GPU”, explains UL in its release . “This means you can see a demonstration of the near-maximum potential performance benefits that enabling DirectStorage could have for your system.”

DirectStorage test arrives as a “more or less” free update to 3DMark

UL Solutions points out that 3DMark DirectStorage is a free update to its benchmarking tool, but requires DLC. In other words, users of the basic version of the software will not receive the update, it is part of the Storage Benchmark DLC. Only those who purchased this extra content will receive the new test without having to pay more.

Taking advantage of the release of its new test for 3DMark, the benchmark developer also celebrates the availability of the software in another language. Starting this week, users will be able to carry out their tests with the program’s interface in French. UL Solutions says that there are more than 300 million people who speak the language around the world.
