Based on a new leak from the MEGAsizeGPU profile on X, formerly Twitter, the logo for NVIDIA’s next GPU shows a model compatible with the Chinese market. This comes after the suspension of production of the GeForce RTX 4090D.
“D” variants are simplified versions of the original NVIDIA card models and are designed to comply with US laws. These models generally have fewer cores and have notable performance differences.
The RTX 5090D model would be the successor to the GeForce RTX 4090D, being an option for Chinese gamers. The previous model, despite being a reduced version of the original, had good sales performance in China, running out of stock in some stores, which led NVIDIA to launch a successor.
Expectation
There is currently no information on the specifications of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090D, but it will likely have to keep the Total Processing Power (TPP) below 4800, using architectural improvements to compensate for the difference in performance.
With the launch of the “D” variants confirmed and underway, the big question is whether NVIDIA will need to restructure its strategy if US restrictions become more stringent.
NVIDIA’s business in China is in a delicate balance, and any future review of American policies could force the company to reevaluate its efforts, which would be a significant challenge, especially for the supply chain.
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090D was released last year, coinciding with the start of the Year of the Dragon. Chinese New Year takes place on January 29th, so the card could be introduced before that date, just as expected for the standard RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 models.
The GeForce RTX 5090D can be expected to launch alongside equivalent “non-D” versions in the first quarter of next year, likely around CES 2025.
