The M5 generation of Apple processors will not be made on TSMC’s advanced 2nm process. This is what the most recent rumor about Apple says, which highlights that the company has already ordered the manufacturing of the M5 to the Taiwanese giant, using the 3nm process.
Rumors speak of Apple’s decision, but not its reasons. The most accepted speculation is that the M5 will not be manufactured in 2nm due to the high costs of the process. Thus, Apple would have chosen to wait for another year before taking advantage of lithography in its A and M lines of processors.
The 3nm process is already used in the M4 chips that power the current MacBook and Mac Mini. However, the lithography version for the M5 would still present gains in performance and efficiency by using a different technology from TSMC, called SoIC – System on Integrated Chip. In other words, made especially for components of this type.
According to unofficial information, the M5 generation of chips has been manufactured on a small scale for testing since July this year. If the roadmap is followed smoothly, mass production of the processors should begin in the second half of 2025.
Will Apple M5 make its debut on MacBook Pro?
Comparing the timing of mass production of the M5 chips with the times when Apple usually introduces new products, WCCFTech speculates that the MacBook Pro could be the first product with the new generation of processors, with MacBook Air models expected in 2026.

This means Apple could skip upgrading the iPad Pro next year so it can launch the device with an M5 in 2026. Alternatively, the company could use the M4 Ultra for an upgrade, which also isn’t an official processor yet. .
The current rumor aligns with predictions from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who already mentioned that Apple would probably not use the 2nm process next year.
