A Massive Entertainment released an update for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandorabringing expansion Secrets of the Spires and improvements aimed at PlayStation 5 Pro. However, the changes generated discontent among players, especially regarding the image quality on the Sony console.
PSSR is identified as responsible for the problem
According to user reviews and tests carried out by specialized channels on YouTube, the game presents serious visual problems on the PS5 Pro. Players pointed to PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) as the main culprit for the unsatisfactory result. The same type of situation has also been reported in other games, like Silent Hill 2: Remake, which recently received a patch.
A user on the ResetEra forum described the situation:
“Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora has been updated with PS5 Pro support and it’s terrible. The other modes have been removed. This is supposed to be 4K quality mode at 60 FPS, but the image quality is horrible. There are flickers in everything: trees, bushes, foliage, etc. I really hope Ubisoft fixes this implementation as it makes me not want to play the game for now. The image quality was previously one of the best I’ve seen in a console game.”
PSSR, a technology that should improve image resolution, appears to be generating the opposite effect. This is not the first title to suffer from problems related to the tool: Silent Hill 2 Remake, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Alan Wake II e F1 2024 also faced similar criticism.
With the expansion Secrets of the Spires set to bring new content and attract more players, technical controversy could become an obstacle. Now, we just have to wait for a fix from Massive Entertainment to resolve the problem and restore the visual experience on the PS5 Pro.
