According to information from the Tom’s Hardware portal, sales of Copilot PCs in the third quarter of 2024 represent less than 10% of notebook sales. Estimates indicate that the segment should reach at least 50% in five years, but adoption is much slower than imagined.
Despite the strong focus on launching Copilot PCs, equipped for example with Snapdragon X Elite or Snapdragon X Plus chipsets, users do not seem very interested in the segment. On the contrary, a large part of sales is just a reflection of the updating of notebooks and not due to artificial intelligence itself.
In any case, the president of Mercury Research, Dean McCarron, commented to the Tom’s Hardware portal about the possibility of errors in the estimate. “There is a high level of uncertainty in this number due to the early stage of the product life cycle and the potential for sampling error in the survey“.
Microsoft focuses on Copilot AI and seeks to accelerate adoption of the tools, even with intrusive Windows 11 warnings. The goal is to encourage users to purchase devices capable of bringing Copilot+ experiences to life.
Sales of Copilot PCs are not expected to grow significantly in the coming quarters
According to estimates, the distribution of Copilots PCs reached 13.3 million units in the third quarter of 2024. Among these, Windows devices represent 53% of products with the Copilot+ seal. As we can see, Microsoft is looking to expand its presence in the segment and accelerate adoption.
Even so, analysis firms point out that retail stores and commerce channels are not in a rush to sell Copilot PCs. Over the next year, the segment is expected to show low growth with most users purchasing the devices out of necessity. of upgrading equipment, rather than searching for AI.
In any case, companies like Microsoft, Qualcomm, Intel and AMD remain focused on boosting the segment. During the year 2025, more and more notebooks – in addition to mobile devices – should continue to flood the market with their NPUs and high processing capacity for artificial intelligence loads.
