Update: Linux gains SD card support of up to 128 TB

Last week, Linux received an important update in kernel 6.11, which now allows the use of SD cards with a maximum theoretical capacity of up to 128 TB. Additionally, the system now supports higher speeds offered by Ultra High-Speed ​​II (UHS-II) and SD Express cards.

SDUC cards, which are part of a new generation of memory cards, can store up to 128 TB of data. For now, the largest cards available reach 8 TB, but they are already a significant advance.

These cards, however, still don’t reach their full speed potential. Higher capacity models use a technology called UHS-I, which transfers data at around 104 MB/s. With UHS-II technology, already supported by Linux, speeds can reach 312 MB/s, making use faster and more efficient.

Another new feature is support for SD Express, which uses a technology called PCIe to further increase speed. They can transfer data at up to 3940 MB/s, approaching the performance of faster SSDs. Thus, tasks such as copying large files or accessing high-resolution content will be faster and more practical.

With these improvements, Linux becomes compatible with the latest memory card technology. This way, they ensure that users can enjoy more modern devices. They are mainly useful for those who work with large volumes of data, such as 4K videos or file backups, but they also benefit those who use the system on portable devices.
