During Qualcomm’s Investor Day 2024, broadcast online on the company’s YouTube channel, Cristiano Amon, CEO, stated that he foresees great progress with the company’s expansion into new markets, with an additional US$22 billion per year by 2029, surpassing competitor AMD in PCs.

Part of the prediction is due to the first wave of Copilot+ PCs from Microsoft and its partners, powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X hardware.

Qualcomm seeks to grow in the PC market, rivaling AMD and Intel. The forecast is that US$4 billion of this new revenue will come from PC chips, found in laptops, mini PCs and even Windows desktops.

If achieved, it would be a notable feat as Qualcomm’s PC chip business is still relatively new, with the Snapdragon X chips launching this year and starting from scratch in market share.

Opportunities

Apple’s decision to migrate from Intel chips to its own processors for Macs was seen as an opportunity for Qualcomm to enter the PC market. Thus, the company is using its developed technologies to strengthen itself in the new market.

During the online event, Amon highlighted that “the ecosystem did not trust existing players to deliver a solution,” suggesting that the efficiency and performance of x86 chips from Intel and AMD led to the arrival of Snapdragon X chips for Copilot+ Windows PCs.

With Qualcomm’s entry into the PC market with Arm-based processors, the company can take market share from both Intel and AMD. Its goal is to attract new customers to its Windows devices on Arm with Qualcomm hardware.
