TSMC would have postponed the opening ceremony of its new facility in Arizona, the famous Fab 21, until the end of January – or even February. .

Unofficial information also pointed to a possible opening ceremony on December 6th. TSMC would hope to bring both current President Joe Biden and his newly elected replacement to the event. Some change in plans, however, made the company choose to wait for Biden’s departure and Trump’s inauguration, which takes place on January 22, 2025.

The Asian website DigiTimes states that potential participants in the opening event would have already been notified of the change. In addition to the names already mentioned, this also includes Katie Hobbs, the governor of Arizona, and Morris Chang, the founder of TSMC.

As we are in the field of unofficial information, we only have speculations about the reasons for this possible postponement. Among them, it is imagined that TSMC wants to be careful not to displease the new leadership of the United States. Trump’s campaign was based on a very protectionist platform for national interests against external influence, and it is not yet known how this may (or will) affect CHIPS Act aid.

TSMC expects to receive $11 billion in investment from the US

The expansion of TSMC’s operations in the USA, such as the new operations at Fab 21 in Arizona, is the result of the investment that the company will receive from the country’s government. Through the CHIPS Act, the Taiwanese company was promised a total of US$11.6 billion. There would be US$6.6 million in subsidies and US$5 million in facilitated loans.

Certain statements that Trump made during the campaign, however, must have caused concern among company executives. With a rigid stance against Taiwan in his speeches, the new president-elect went so far as to say that the country “took over” the US chip manufacturing business.

In any case, TSMC is not without “cards” in this dispute. The country still depends on the company to manufacture chips using today’s most advanced processes, below 5nm – especially for future 2nm products. Even if the government wants to stop subsidies, it is unlikely that the Taiwanese company’s customers in the US will reduce their orders anytime soon, and perhaps this will have an impact on lobbying the new White House administration.
